I have found myself listening to babbler songs and wondering which ones I may have heard in the distant forests of Thailand. It’s such a great resource, I can go over woodcreeper songs, test myself to see which vocalizations I still remember from the ridiculously diverse rainforests of Tambopata, Peru.

I bought a new rucksack yesterday and the first thing I checked when I brought it home was, how easily my spotting scope with a mounted window clamp fits in – test passed with flying colours. What purpose rucksack did I choose? Well, that tells a lot about me: it’s a 40l plane carry-on type (which I will carry on as my day-pack, too).

New World Vultures are their own family, Cathartidae, that has moved around a bit with the proliferation of genetic testing such that for a while they were thought to be allied with storks, but is now pretty well within, but not too within, the other diurnal raptors. This species seems to frequently join mixed-species flocks – in research in Thailand, the species was found in 20% of the mixed-species flocks. On the morning of day 4 at Nonggang, I had a sore throat but a covid test was negative, so birding continued … On the plus side, it looks rather funny when wet.

Then we are both hopeless … Anyway, the paper tests whether small roads in a forest are a hindrance to birds – are they reluctant to cross? Hill ranges in eastern Myanmar and western Thailand are also suspected to be the intergradation zone between C. hardwickii and C. hardwickii and C. malayana had been collected.
