Due to the nature of the day and the ridiculous tameness of the Palm Warblers , the difference that wound up making the most difference here was the near focus. In my later tests the Countryman gave perceptibly clearer views of near objects, and the looks I got at the stunning russet-capped tail-waggers were killer.

The wound was also very contaminated with dirt and debris. The true test will be next month when x-rays are taken. The trap was not attached but it was obvious this was the cause, and the x-ray confirmed it. This bird was lucky to be found and rescued by a Good Samaritan in this remote area.

One of the rangers at the refuge had some photos showing an injury on the bird’s breast, likely from a gunshot wound as the refuge is a popular site for waterfowl hunting, including hunting the thousands of Tundra Swans in the area. It wasn’t long before these two swans I had photographed also died.
