We are on the go until usually around 1:30 give or take a herd of zebras blocking the road. That would have tested out rental insurance policy! By the time you see this in the United States, I will have had a full week to explore this amazing area, and the wildlife that calls this home.

The Big Five–lion, leopard, African buffalo, elephant, and rhinoceros–are impressive, but my heart lies with the patterned mammals, giraffes and zebras. I was ecstatic when we found two giraffes by the side of the road “necking”, which I found out is a male test of strength and dominance, not a romantic entanglement.

Is it offensive to say that Australian Zebra Finches breed like rabbits? The quirkily titled article “Why Love Matters to a Zebra Finch” describes how pairings based on female preferences rather than on chance had much higher reproduction rates. I guess we have to be thankful they do not also wear leggings. So typical.

These are sonograms representing the song of four Zebra Finches. Imagine starting with two sets of Zebra Finch hatchlings. … we experimentally test if house finches ( Carpodacus mexicanus ) can modulate the minimum frequency of their songs in response to different noise levels. The top two are individuals with normal song.

I ended up scoring four lifers: African Dusky Flycatcher , Village Weaver , Whyte Barbet and Zebra Waxbill. I described what I had done, and she happily started ticking every possible test for every possible tropical disease on her little lab sheet – from bubonic plague to yaws. Then I heard a ruckus.
